Rudi Spring was born in 1962 in Lindau on Lake Constance. Among his most influential mentors during the years spanning 1971 to 1975 was Alfred Kuppelayer, to whom he owes his insight into harmony and counterpoint, analysis, composition and piano. In 1978 Soring began his studies in chamber music with the cellist Heinrich Schiff with whom he often performed. This partnership lasted until 1982 and led to several new compositions. Rudi Spring has been active as a church organist and since 1985 as a conductor. From 1981 unti 1986 he studied composition with Wilhelm Killmayer and piano with Karl Hermann Mrongovius at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. He has taught Lied interpretation at the same institute since 1999.  Several radio and CD recordings document his activities as a chamber music pianist and as a Lied accompanist. A recital of solo piano music by C. Ph. E. Bach, J. S. Bach and W. Fr. Bach, titled "Bach Dreifach" was released on the ADERA label in 2000. Under his own name he produced "Auf Schuberts Spur", a 3-CD set recorded in 2003, devoted to the period of the piano sonatas of 1823-26. In 2009 "Miniaturvertrauen", piano music by Jean Sibelius (alessa records). Spring continues to give solo recitals as well as making cabaret appearances with chanson programmes.  He has worked extensively for many years with the accordionist Maria Reiter, the singer Salome Kammer and the cellist Jessica Kuhn. In recent years Rudi Spring has been commissioned by the State of Baden-Württemberg, the Munich Puppet Players, the International Bodensee Festival, the Hugo-Wolf-Akademie Stuttgart, the Arp-Museum Rolandseck and the Klavier-Festival Ruhr. He was awarded the International Bodenseekulturpreis in 2002, the Lindauer Kulturpreis 2012, and invited as Artist in Residence to Rome (Villa Massimo), in 2005. Rudi Spring considers teaching (chamber music or theory or as a conductor), interpreting (as solo pianist or in chamber music or with a singer) and composing as an unseparable unit: all these aspects are constantly influencing and inspiring each other.

In den Jahren 1971-75 war sein prägender Lehrer in Tonsatz, Analyse, Klavier & Komposition Alfred Kuppelmayer. 1978 begann er in Bregenz ein Kammermusikstudium bei dem Violoncellisten Heinrich Schiff, mit dem er schließlich auch gemeinsam konzertierte und auf dessen Anregung bis 1982 eine Reihe von Kompositionen entstand. Rudi Spring war 1975-86 als Kirchenorganist und ist seit 1985 immer wieder als Dirigent tätig. An der Münchner Hochschule für Musik und Theater – wo er 1981-86 Komposition (bei William Killmayer) und Klavier (bei Karl-Hermann Mrongovius) studierte – unterrichtet er seit 1999 im Rahmen eines Lehrauftrags Liedgestaltung. Kompositorischer Schwerpunkt ist das weite Feld der Kammermusik, gefolgt vom Lied und einigen Werken für Kammerorchester, seltener für Chor. Hauptverlag ist vierdreiunddreissig, München. Zahlreiche Rundfunkaufnahmen dokumentieren sein Schaffen als Komponist wie als Interpret, vor allem beim Bayerischen Rundfunk/München und beim Österreichischen Rundfunk/Dornbirn. 2000 erschien bei ADERA "Bach dreifach": 3 CDs mit Soloklaviermusik von C. Ph. E. Bach, J. S. Bach und W. Fr. Bach; 2003/04 in Eigenproduktion "Auf Schuberts Spur", eine weitere Dreifach-CD, die Franz Schuberts Klaviersonatenperiode 1823-26 gewidmet ist; 2009 bei ALESSA RECORDS "Miniaturvertrauen": auserlesene Klaviermusik von Jean Sibelius.  Seit 1994 verbindet ihn eine vielfältige Zusammenarbeit mit der Akkordeonistin Maria Reiter, seit 2000 mit der Sängerin Salome Kammer, seit 2005 mit der Cellistin Jessica Kuhn. Kompositionsaufträge kamen in den letzen Jahren vom Land Baden-Württemberg, dem Deutschen Musikrat, dem Münchner Kammerorchester, den Munich Puppet Players, Konstantin Wecker (Orchestrierung von dessen Filmmusik "In der Mitte eines Lebens"), dem Internationalen Bodensee-Festival, der Hugo-Wolf-Akademie Stuttgart, dem Arp-Museum Rolandseck, dem Klavier-Festival Ruhr. Rudi Spring ist Träger des Internationalen Bodenseekulturpreises 2002 sowie des Lindauer Kulturpreises 2012. 2005 war er Stipendiat der Deutschen Akademie Villa Massimo in Rom. Für Rudi Spring gehören Vermittlung von Musik (sei es als Kammermusiklehrer, Hörseminarleiter oder Dirigent), Ausübung (als Pianist in Soloabenden, für Kammermusik, Lied und Chanson) und die schöpferische Dimension untrennbar zusammen, bedingen und befruchten sich wechselseitig.
